The Interactive Digital Systems Research Laboratory is the first institutionalized laboratory of the Department of Digital Arts and Cinema and serves research, development and educational needs (including the provision of know-how and studies, as well as the development of standards) in the broader fields of Physical Computing and interactive digital installations. The laboratory is particularly active in the research, design, development and programming of physical computing applications, where interaction with the natural environment takes place by utilizing sensors and other electronic devices.
Activities covered include the design of custom hardware (e.g. boards and circuits), 3D printing and basic processing of physical materials, depending on the application. Interactive systems also include intellectual systems and the Internet of Things. Research also includes smart algorithms, which adapt the behavior of the interactive installation. Overall, the laboratory covers the research and development of digital technology applications, combining interdisciplinary areas that include physical computing, electronics, automation, lighting, audio and visual information, 3D printing, intellectual systems, computers and networks, smart algorithms and other related areas.
The director of the laboratory is Panagiotis Papazogou, Associate Professor.
