SYLLABUS


The course introduces -practically and theoretically- the students to the history and theory of performance, in its multiplicity and versatility: from the rituality of antiquity and ancient drama to the performative actions of artistic pioneers, to the performance art of 1960s-1970s and contemporary performance art, digital performances and performative artworks. Students become familiar with the work of iconic artists, as well as with a series of theoretical concepts and approaches, which come from art, philosophy, anthropology. At the same time, they practice the stages of the creative process, from the conception of the idea to the completion of a Performance. The main goal is to acquire tools for their own work, at the intersection of art and technology, at the intersection of live event and technological experimentation, having a solid theoretical base, having meet the panorama of performance in art and life.

The course is assessed by a performance presentation at the end of the semester, accompanied by a short essay.

 

Upon completion of the course, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • Understand the basic concepts, theories, and issues related to the history and theories of performance and performance art.

  • Understand and apply the specificities/requirements of various types of performance (site-specific digital performance, visual performance, installation-performance, etc.).

  • Create performative works.

  • Analyze and evaluate a performance work in an interdisciplinary and interartistic manner.

  • Design the dramaturgy of performative works.

  • Utilize theories of performativity in their artistic practice
