We are pleased to announce that the team from the Athens Law School, representing Greece in the European Regional Round of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition (2025 European Rounds), held from 31 March to 4 April at the European Space Agency (ESA) in Paris, France, achieved a notable distinction by placing third in Europe for their written memorials.
The Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition is organised annually by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), with the European round coordinated by the European Centre for Space Law (ECSL). This year’s case involved legal issues related both to general public international law and, more specifically, to international humanitarian law and space law. It focused on the conduct of space activities in the context of armed conflict, as well as on legal questions arising from collisions between space objects in orbit. The full case is available on the IISL website:IISLManfredLachsSpaceLawMootCourtCompetition 2025 – IISL.
This year’s team consisted of undergraduate students Efthalia Argyri, Elli Sventzouri, and Niki Voumvouraki. The team worked under the supervision of Georgios Kyriakopoulos, Associate Dean and Associate Professor at the Athens Law School, with additional support in the preparation process provided by trainee lawyer Vera Palialexi and postgraduate law student and trainee lawyer Georgios Chatzicharalambous—both former members of the School’s previous moot court teams.
The students received positive remarks from the judging panel regarding the quality of their performance. Their legal reasoning was commended for both its depth and consistency, as was their grasp of international law, international humanitarian law, and space law.
The Athens Law School’s continued participation in this academically demanding competition—requiring sustained study and engagement with both public international and space law—reflects the high level of its students and their ability to respond effectively to complex legal challenges.
We also acknowledge the support of the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, the University’s Governing Council, the company Hellas Sat S.A., and the law firm PotamitisVekris Law Partnership, whose contributions were instrumental in facilitating the team's participation this year.
