At the end of March, Professor Alexander-Linos Sicilianos, former President of the European Court of Human Rights, Vice President of the Institute of International Law and member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law - Académie de droit international de La Haye , gave a series of lectures at universities in Canada on climate change and human rights, the current challenges facing the European Court of Human Rights, and human rights at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
In particular, Professor Sicilianos gave a lecture at the Faculté de droit - Université de Sherbrooke on the topic «Le changement climatique devant les juridictions internationales» on March 21, 2025.
On March 24, 2025, Professor Sicilianos was the keynote speaker in the Conférence Maximilien-Bibaud organized by the Université Laval and the Société québécoise de droit international on the topic «Les défis actuels rencontrés par la Cour européenne des droits de l’Homme: un regard de l'intérieur».
Moreover, on March 25, 2025, Professor Sicilianos gave a presentation on the topic «La centralité des droits de l’homme devant la Cour internationale de Justice: défis et perspectives» at the University of Ottawa in a conference organized by the HRREC - Human Rights Research and Education Centre, the Section de droit civil de la Faculté de droit de l'Université d'Ottawa, the University of Ottawa - Faculty of Law | Common Law, the Research Chair on Sustainable, Responsible and Inclusive Trade Law, the Société québécoise de droit international, the International Law Group (Faculty of Law - Common Law Section) and the Observatory on Human Rights at the UN | Observatoire des droits humains à l’ONU.
A commentary to Professor Sicilianos’ presentation was delivered by Daniel Turp, Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Société québécoise de droit international. The speakers were introduced by Mila Gagnon, President of the Société étudiante de droit international and the event was moderated by Valériane Thool, Coordinator of the the Research Chair on Sustainable, Responsible and Inclusive Trade Law and permanent lecturer in international law at the Université de Sherbrooke.
