On January 26, 2022, the results of Webometrics' "Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations" global ranking were announced. According to this announcement, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens records a rare performance for a Greek University, being for the fifth consecutive year in the top 100 of a world ranking. Based on the results announced by Webometrics, it is ranked 92nd in the world and 18th in Europe. This ranking, which was published for the 13th time, includes 7497 Universities, including the 24 Greek ones. (See Table 1). NKUA is ranked 1st among Greek institutions, with 2.724.009 citations. This performance gives NKUA the 1st place among the Universities in the Balkans and the 2nd place among the Universities of the Mediterranean Sea

The "top five" of the best Greek Universities is fulfilled by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at 278 with 1.194.794 citations, the University of Patras at 375 with 861.488 citations, the National Technical University of Athens at position 388 with 825.020 citations and the University of Crete at 396 with 809.541 citations.

This ranking list is based on the citation number of research work, professors and researchers of the Institutions. Citations are identified through Google Scholar's search engine and the top researchers’ profiles in this engine.  More specifically citations from the top 210 public profiles of each university are collected. This number of profiles is for allowing size independent comparisons.  The top twenty (20) profiles of the list are excluded for improving representativeness by removing outliers. For the rest of the top profiles, the numbers of citations are added and the institutions are ranked in descending order of this indicator.
